TWENTY-eight families received keys to their new homes in the Renaissance at Carmichael Subdivision yesterday, with Housing and Urban Renewal Minister Keith Bell revealing that an additional 23 homes will be completed in six weeks.

Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis attended the key presentation ceremony, saying it symbolises hope, stability, and the promise of a brighter future.

He said: “As we hand over these keys, remember that they unlock not just doors. They unlock potential, dreams, and the very essence of what it means to strive for and achieve a better life. This is the kind of country we are committed to building — one where every Bahamian has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point.”

Mr Bell said the government had made headway in helping people obtain homeownership in New Providence, Eleuthera, Abaco, Grand Bahama, and San Salvador.

He said once the next 23 homes are completed, 144 rent-to-own home complexes will exist within the Renaissance at Carmichael Subdivision.

“The rent-to-own programme strikes a balance between extending homeownership opportunities and maintaining low risk for the government for those finding traditional financing out of reach,” Mr Bell said.

“We are delivering on our promises while at the same time reaching lower to ensure that no one is left behind.”

He noted a long waiting list of people looking to get homes, with some applying repeatedly.

He said officials are dissecting the list.

“You have persons who are single mothers, you have persons who have already placed their down payments, you have a number of persons who have a very good income, and so, therefore, we have been able to deal with those persons,” he said.

Barcia McIntosh, 37, expressed excitement to finally be in her new home after starting the process in 2022.

“It’s important to save so that you can meet your financial obligations as it relates to homeownership,” she said. “It could be a long daunting task. Just keep at it and eventually you will get it.”
