British mother drowns whileattempting to rescue her sons

A BRITISH mother died in Bimini yesterday after she was swept away by a strong current while trying to rescue her two sons, police said.

The 36-year-old woman had been snorkelling with her husband and their two boys near the southern point of the island when the current carried both children away, according to preliminary information. She went after them and was also swept away.

She was later pulled from the water and taken to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where CPR was reportedly performed. She was then taken to the local clinic, where a doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her.

Officers at the Alice Town Police Station were told shortly after 10am that a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. When they arrived, she had already been taken to the clinic. Police did not say what happened to her sons.

Police said foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Her death is the latest in a series of drownings in Bimini’s waters. In May, a 69-year-old American tourist died after he was found floating motionless during a snorkelling excursion about four nautical miles south of South Bimini. Passengers who said they were doctors performed CPR as the boat returned to shore, but he was pronounced dead at the clinic.

In February last year, Bimini recorded three drownings in a single week, including an 85-year-old snorkeller who became unresponsive off Ocean Cay.
