It was raining goals in Coral Springs, Florida as the University of the Bahamas men’s soccer team got the 5-3 win over Trinity College of Florida (TCF) in their International Tour on Saturday.

UB got two goals each from midfielder Ronaldo Green and forward Philip Pilgrim while midfielder Clerdjevinsky Clerjuste chipped in with a goal of his own.

UB’s head coach Alex Thompson said that the score does not depict how the game went.

“The players we needed to step up, stepped up,” Thompson said. “We made things a little more difficult than need be and there needs to be a bit of maturing within the squad, particularly for games like this, when we're facing competition that we're very confident that we can beat.”

Pilgrim picked up a loose ball in the 14th minute and tapped it into an open goal to give UB the 1-0 lead. TCF tied it up at a goal apiece four minutes later.

The 35th minute saw UB’s all-time leading goalscorer Green taking a well-placed free-kick that saw a waiting Clerjuste who headed it past the goalkeeper to put his squad up 2-1.

UB went into the half holding the 2-1 lead. That changed when UB won a throw-in and winger and freshman Nathan Walker threw a deep ball into the box that TCF could not control. Pilgrim was poaching and once again tapped the ball into the back of the net in the 53rd minute for his second goal of the game to put UB up 3-1.

All that changed when TCF scored a free-kick and penalty-kick in the 63rd minute and 70th minute respectively to tie the game at three goals.

Green won a penalty-kick in the 78th minute and easily put it away for his first goal of the match and season. UB led 4-3 at that point. Forward Nahum Johnson was barreling towards TCF goal for his first goal of the season but was fouled and won a penalty-kick in the 82nd minute. Green took the penalty-kick and got his second goal of the game as UB led 5-3.

Green said that despite the win they have some aspects to work on.

“I think I had a fantastic game, two goals and an assist as central midfielder – that's much more than I can give the team,” Green said. “We started off sloppy. pick it up, then it started off sloppy again, and then at the end you can see we pick it up again. Three of the goals we gave them and all five of our goals we had to work for.”

UB held on for the win to open their International Tour with a win and a draw over the weekend. They drew 2-2 against Millennia Atlantic University on Thursday.

UB continues its International Tour with a back-to-back matchup against Atlantis University on Thursday, October 1 and Friday October 2 with a matchup against Atlantis University at the Kendall Soccer Park in Miami, Florida.
