Funeral Service of the late Vernald Davis Winters age 61 years old of Claridge Road and formerly of Crooked Island will be held on Friday, November 2nd, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Annex Baptist Cathedral, Wulff Road & Pinedale. Officiating will be Apostle Mitchell Jones and Dr. R. E. Cooper Jr. and other ministers of The Gospel. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Gardens, Soldier Road.
Many who came to know Vernald would perhaps know him as “Sentry #1” stationed at his favourite look out point on the corner of the intersection of Wulff & Claridge Roads. His spot was the “national milieu” and from his lofty perch he could keenly sense what was going on nationally as hundreds of daily commuters made their way from east to west, north to south or vice versa passing him numerous times in a given day.
An accomplished bass guitarist, Vernald loved music...and, like love, knew it to be a universal language, calming the savage beast. Agreeably, his persona may not have always been pleasant. Sometimes he greeted “good morning” and at others he candidly told what was on his mind laced with double loaded expletives. While he did not participate in the “ballot box exercise”, on sentry duty, Vernald knew that there was too much political tension in the country and that the disease of the day was not cancer, tuberculosis, dengue fever, meningitis or an inoperable hernia. To him, people seemed to have too much religion and did not show real feelings in reaching out to help one another. Except for his family and others who really cared, he surmised that one of the greatest evils in the world was the lack of love and Christian charity!

Viewing will be held in the Perpetual Suite at Restview Memorial Mortuary and Crematorium Ltd., Robinson and Solider Roads on Thursday(TODAY) from 10:00am to 6:00pm and at the church on Friday from 9:30am until service time.
