Rupert Ezekiel Williamson was born 29th July 1938, as the fourth of eight children to the Late Mr. Holston & Caroline Williamson in Selvan, Acklins. He was later affectionately called ‘Lipstick’, ‘The Barber’, and ‘The General’. Some even called him ‘Papa’ which he answered to with great pride.
Rupert began his early education at the Hardhill, Acklins All Age School. He moved to Nassau for a bit and later gained employment on the contract where he worked for quite some time. This employment allowed him to financially assist on the upbringing of his younger brothers and sisters. Upon returning from the contract he was employed as a Police Reserve, at the Boys Industrial School and his beloved profession Barbering.
His first business was the Sportsman Barbershop which was at the time on Taylor and Market St. which he partnered with Cool Breeze. As an entrepreneur he began the construction of his first building on Ross Corner and Market St which became the most popular Barbershop in THE BAHAMAS. Many such as the Governor Generals - Sir Orville Turnquest, Sir Arthur Foulkes, and US Ambassador Sidney Williams to name a few. Politicians from all parties patronized the Barbershop and Most special to him were Bahamians from all walks of Life.
In 1961, Rupert met the beautiful Minerva Cartwright from Long Island. They were married in 1964. This union was blessed with three (3) wonderful children, Catherine, Antone, and Dwane.
In 1998, Lipstick retired from his beloved Profession and moved to San Salvador with his companion Renay Butler where he continued his entrepreneurship by building cottages and became an avid sport fisherman.
In July of this year, Lipstick was diagnosed with cancer. He put up a valiant fight but succumbed to this dreaded disease on December 8th, 2013 at 10:47am at his residence on East Street and Ross Corner in the presence of his sons Antone, Dwane, his brother Berkley Williamson and Renay Butler. His departure will leave a void amongst his family and friends but he has assured us that he is holding on to Jesus. We are comforted in knowing that we will see him again.
