Captain Geoffrey Gordon Brown

Funeral service for Captain Geoffrey Gordon Brown, of Camperdown, Nassau, The Bahamas, who passed away at Doctors Hospital,on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the age of 88, will be held at Ebenezer Methodist Church, East Shirley Street, Nassau, on Saturday, 5th March, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.

Captain Brown is survived by Janet (Thompson) Brown, his wife of 60 years; sister, Sylvia Brown; children, Angela Brown-Cuevas and Geoffrey Brown Jr.; daughter-in-law, Monica Brown; son-in-law, Rodney Cuevas; grandchildren, Stephen Sweeting, Richard Sweeting, Kelly Ann (Sweeting) Bodie, Geoffrey Brown III, and Lauren Brown; grandson-in-law, Philip Bodie; and great-grandson, Nathan Bodie. 

Geoffrey was born on Williams Street in New Providence on June 6, 1927, the 10th of eleven children of Captain Willard and Florence (Bethel) Brown.

He is predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Philip, Frederick, Lester, Neville, Anton, Godfrey; and his sisters, Angela, Barbara, and Joan.

Captain Brown’s career on the sea began when he was just 14 years old. He then served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and later worked as captain on several yachts before purchasing his own, the Wilmar. A passionate and industrious fisherman, Captain Brown expanded his fleet to three vessels before venturing into real estate with his brother, Lester, in the 1950s, where he ultimately became a highly successful real estate broker and developer.

Aside from his professional accomplishments, Captain Brown will be most fondly remembered for his devotion to his family, his generosity and patriotism, and his philanthropic efforts towards the Methodist Church and his beloved Queen’s College.
