Doreen Violet Moir née Burnside
Born on October 27, 1927 in Kilrea, Northern Ireland died peacefully at home in bed to the singing of hymns on the evening of the 22nd October, 2018 at around 10 pm.
Lymphoma did not take her faith, love, generosity nor dignity. She was ready for her departure and looking forward to a celestial welcome and reunion.
Doreen also affectionately known as “Deenie”, grew up in Toronto, Canada. One of four siblings, she attended Lawrence Park Collegiate and what is now Ryerson University.
A very charismatic, athletic and attractive woman, Deenie was always the centre of attention in an effortless and unassuming way. These natural gifts, plus a quest for adventure in her youth led Deenie to become a model for Town and Country magazine and do photo shoots, Public Relations and Marketing for hotels and resorts in The Bahamas (Montagu Beach Hotel) Bermuda and Canada.
It was in Bermuda that Deenie met “the love of her life”, Stanley Moir. They married and had a son named Richard and came to The Bahamas in 1956.
Stanley died in March, 2012 and the past six years without her “soul mate” were not easy as they did everything together. Cruise ships were a favourite. Deenie and Stan loved The Bahamas and its people. Sixty two years a residence, she had raised two sons, Richard and James, a wife to a senior police officer, General Manager’s executive assistant at BOLAM Bank, learnt Spanish.
In “retirement”, Deenie took up volunteering as a hospital Yellow Bird and at the Humane Society. She loved meeting people. Fendi on Bay Street was a logical choice too. Deenie touched many lives in a positive way. Her presence, immaculate sense of dress, caring attitude, generosity, humour and will power were inspirational. Not to forget her regular long distance swimming, dancing and culinary abilities. As a wife, mother, grandmother, loyal confidante and friend, Doreen Moir was a “one off”. She loved life and family. Her Christian faith was her foundation.
Left to mourn with fond memories are sons, Richard and James; their wives, Victoria and Kim; grandchildren, Skye, Iona and James.
The family would like to record their deep gratitude and appreciation for the loving care and professional advice provided by Doctors Christine Chin, Williamson Chea and Ian Kelly. Also we would like to thank Shelrene, Sherene, (Reen) , Stephanie, Pat and Ruby who cared for Deenie and treated her as family, a privilege indeed. They went above and beyond. Even Leah, with her youthful innocence, exuberance and songs was a God send. To all thank you.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
