REQUESTING the public's close observance of a new road measure intended to alleviate traffic coming out of the port, the Ministry of Works announced the installation of a temporary mini-roundabout at the Arawak Cay junction yesterday.

According to assistant engineer at the Ministry of Works Mario Smith, the mini-round-about is a painted marking on the road's surface which can be driven over but is governed by the same concept as a regular round-about, in the sense that drivers should yield to cars on their right.

Drivers "will need to slow down, approach the intersection with caution, ensure that traffic coming from the right is not in their way - if it is they yield to that traffic, if not they can continue through the intersection", said Mr Smith.

Chief civil engineer at the Ministry of Works David Bullard said while the ministry has long-term plans to improve the busy junction, including widening the lanes, they have recognised the need to put something in place in the short term to assist vehicles, particularly those leaving the port.

He said: "It is all about approaching with care, taking your time, being observant and giving way to traffic to the right."
