Death penalty

EDITOR, The Tribune.

WITH the murder rate predicated to surpass last year's to set a new record, I am baffled and confused as to why the government and the judiciary are still subjecting the citizens of this country to the "mercies" of the London based Privy Council.

Our constitution states the "we" are a Christian nation but the murder rate here does not reflect these Christian values, so when convicted murderers such as Max Tido are sentenced to death and he appeals to our highest courts with no result, he then appeals to the Privy Council to have his death sentence overturned and these people grant him his wish with the unbelievable reason that his crime was not "the worst of the worst" by their standards.

Now tell me, why are the law-abiding citizens of the Bahamas beholden to another country's citizens and their sense of values?

Seriously, just take a look at what their values have got them in terms of crime and immigration and here we have these same people through our legal system allowing this very same Privy Council to impose their values, or lack thereof, on us thus allowing the perpetrators of murder, etc, to sit back and relax because they know the Privy Council will save them.

I guess the "worst of the worst" crime would only be considered as such if someone murders one or more of the Royal family members.

We as Bahamians need to stop this practice of having anything to do with this foreign group of Privy Council members and actually abolish this altogether. I mean if we are capable of governing ourselves, then surely we can decide the fates of persons convicted of crimes that we consider "the worst of the worst" and hang these murderers by the neck until they are dead, dead, dead.
