As we listen to politicians

EDITOR, The Tribune.

It is truly amazing that politicians are so able to divide us along the lines of their views.

We look at the same item and depending on our political leanings we develop totally opposing views.

This should not be surprising when we remember that most of our politicians are lawyers and that part of their training is to take any side of a situation and provide a compelling argument to defend that position.

But what about the rest of us do we suspend our thinking and reasoning and just wholeheartedly accept a position because a particular person said so. When our guts are telling us this is rubbish do we just go along to maintain the status quo?

I am yet to see a politician come out and say "on this particular issue I was wrong, I look forward to correcting my mistake and moving on." It does not happen instead what we see are politicians who so convince themselves that they have to project this image of infallibility, that any mistake is seen as a sign of weakness instead of being human.

I hope that one day we will realise that no one person, party or politician has a monopoly on good ideas and we will develop the level of maturity to not just discard ideas because it did not originate with us.

Then perhaps we will not have to start over every five years discarding the tremendous effort that went into the preceding five years to move us forward.
