No record of victimisation

EDITOR, The Tribune.

You recently published a letter which may have been a well-intentioned attempt to demonstrate support for the new Leader of the FNM and admiration for his ability to positively impact political discourse in our country going forward.

If this was the writer’s intent, it is regrettable that he or she failed so terribly. In so doing the writer maligned the good name of our former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Hubert Alexander Ingraham and the record of the three Governments which he led with capable FNM ministers.

The writer credited Dr. Minnis for being honest when he “acknowledged” that the FNM may also have victimized individuals in the past. Clearly, Dr. Minnis misspoke when, during a press conference, he indicated that his Party may also have engaged in victimization while in office.

Dr. Minnis was wrong to respond thoughtlessly to such an important question giving what has proven to be a reckless, untrue and damaging statement to himself and to his party.

There is no record or evidence that former PM Ingraham or any of his Ministers, among whom Dr. Minnis was one, victimized anyone.

In a rush to build up the new Leader of the FNM, himself a product of the Ingraham Cabinet and a personal friend of Mr. Ingraham, no one should seek to tarnish or belittle the tremendous work achieved by Mr. Hubert Ingraham and his team of FNM Cabinet Ministers.

We hope and expect that Dr. Minnis out of respect to his former Leader and friend and to his former Cabinet colleagues will acknowledge that he misspoke and retract what has proven to be a terribly damaging statement.
