Tribune employee fights off pair of armed robbers

A TRIBUNE employee fought off two armed men early Monday morning when they attempted to rob him of his newspapers as he made his deliveries.

The employee, who wants his name withheld, said he was making his regular deliveries at the Town Centre Mall around 2am when he was approached by the first suspect.

“I was delivering to Town Centre Mall and after my delivery I was in the parking lot and this fellow stop me and asked me for a light,” he said.

“I was reaching for my lighter for him when I saw another man come from out of nowhere. He was trying to open my passenger door when I noticed he had something in his hand. The other guy tried to grab me out of the car. That’s when I pulled out the knife I always carry with me and I stabbed him in the shoulder.”

“The other guy tried to jump on me and I got out of the car. They both tried to fight me and I stabbed the guy another two times. The police was circling the area and they saw what was going on and came over,” he said.

The employee said the police called an ambulance for the injured man. He and the second attacker were taken to the police station to give their statements.

He said police did not tell him the condition of the man in the hospital. However, he was told that he would be called in if anything changed.

The employee also said that this was the second time men had tried to rob him as he made his runs. He said earlier this year while in the East Street area, some guys tired to rob him and steal his car, but he managed to get away.

The Tribune tried to contact senior officials in the police force, however, no calls were returned up to press time.

In the wake of a string of armed robberies over the past couple of weeks, police are asking members of the public to be a bit more aware of their surroundings.

Last week, Superintendent Stephen Dean said police are attempting to get a handle on the situation and he believes more than 50 per cent of the armed robberies could have been prevented.

Hmm...the Police "are attempting to get a handle on the situation.......could have been prevented" he is correct...however when citizens call to alert the Police about criminal activities...no action. Tribune, this is your charge and on your home turf.....do a story about the "female activitiies" that take place every night between 9.30pm and 3am on Dowdswell Street; I have called every night for the past three weeks and guess what..business is still flourishing. Tourism Police Officers wanted to know if the ladies were disturbing the peace.... If we are so concerned about any and all criminal activities...do the story that's right at your back door...and you might want to also alert Supt. Dean again!!
