Flood warning: Two to five inches of rain expected

FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY:

This is the forecast for the Bahamas for today and tonight Tuesday 19th June 2012

Warnings…models are projecting total rainfall amounts between two to five inches to affect the northwest and central islands from late Tuesday evening trough Thursday evening.

Residents in low lying and flood prone areas should make preparations to protect their life and property during localized flooding.

General situation: an active surface trough across the southeast Bahamas will continue to produce unsettled weather over the Bahamas as it slowly drifts northwards

For the northwest and central Bahamas

Weather: partly cloudy to cloudy, breezy and warm conditions today > with a few scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, turning cloudy and breezy tonight with some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms

Advisory: small craft should exercise caution

Winds: northeast to east at 15-20 knots

Seas: 4-7 feet over the ocean

For the southeast Bahamas

Weather: cloudy to overcast with widely scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms throughout the day and into the night.

Advisory: small craft should be alert for gusty winds and higher > seas in or near heavy showers and thunderstorms

Winds: east to southeast at 10-15 knots but with occasional higher > gusts

Seas: 2-4 feet over the ocean

Extended weather forecast: this surface trough will continue to influence the weather over the Bahamas through Thursday evening

Weather: cloudy to overcast with widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day and into the night

Winds: east to southeast at 15 knots

Seas: 3-5 feet over the ocean

Forecast for Thursday

Weather: variable cloudiness with widely scattered showers and > isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, turning cloudy and warm > at night

Winds: east to southeast at 10-15 knots

Seas: 2-4 feet over the ocean

Tropical weather outlook: two areas are being watched for further signs of development:

1) Showers and thunderstorms associated with a non-tropical low located about 500 miles Northeast of Bermuda. This system has a medium chance - 50 percent - of becoming a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours as it moves east-northeastwards at 10-15 miles per hour

2) A large area of cloudiness, showers and a few thunderstorms over the northwestern Caribbean sea stretching into the southwestern Atlantic Ocean is associated with a surface trough. Although upper-level conditions are not expected to be particularly conducive for development of this system, this system has a low chance -10 percent - of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours as it moves northwestward at 5-10 miles pre hour.

Elsewhere: tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours
