POLICE Commissioner Ellison Greenslade invited members of the British Legion to Police Headquarters yesterday to honour surviving Bahamian war veterans.

Mr Greenslade said: "I am very very delighted to be able to receive the president and executive members of the British Legion here in the Bahamas and certainly the veterans of World War II.

"We recognise that we owe a debt of gratitude to the people who have gone before us who are now at a more advanced stage."

The commissioner and Legion members discussed upcoming events in celebration of Veterans Week in early November and how the police can assist the organisation.

British Legion office administrator Adina Munroe said with 49 registered veterans, the local branch of the Legion seeks to preserve the legacy of World War II veterans in the Bahamas, while also ensuring that members are taken care of and receive their pensions.

Chairman of the British Legion Percy Strachan said: "The British Legion exists for the sole purpose of maintaining our thanks to those men and women who served in our armed forces during World War II.

"We are grateful for those of us that are still holding on and we do show our appreciation and remembrance of those who have passed on."
