NFL PICKS: Week six results

I’M all about naming things after Sir Sidney Poitier. Even before the bridge it was one of my favourite things to do (scoff if you want but none of you can prove it’s not true, ask my mom for verification).

To be fair to the public outcry, anytime you get the chance to stand strong in protest and bash an icon, someone that grew from one of your very own tiny Family Island settlements to become internationally recognised, heralded as a legend and who rose to the pinnacle of his field...you’ve got to do it.

It’s such a rare opportunity.

Naturally, while watching week 6, I thought we had to dedicate the weekly awards to SSP (I’m moving forward with this as a de facto nickname).

We use some his most influential quotes from movies, books and interviews (I did tons of research strictly for argument purposes) to shine the spotlight on last week.

Sure he has an Academy Award for best actor, a bridge named in his honour and a lifetime of awards...but this...this I think he’ll really like.

Week 6 Awards:

Sir Sidney Poitier

Edition

“So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness.” - Jason Garrett and the entire Cowboys coaching staff’s clock management down the stretch in the loss at Baltimore.

“Okay listen, you think I’m so inconsequential? Then try this on for size. All those who see unworthiness when they look at me and are given thereby to denying me value - to you I say, I’m not talking about being AS GOOD as you. I hereby declare myself BETTER than you. “ - Russell Wilson has gone head to head with Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady...and came out with the win both times. I think the Matt Flynn argument has ended.

“You Think Of Yourself As A Coloured Man, I Think Of Myself As a Man” - Replace the word “man” with “quarterback” and you basically have RG3’s response to his critics. He’s not Michael Vick, he’s not even Cam Newton...we really have no idea what he is yet.

“I’ll always be chasing you...Glory” - The Patriots’ secondary.

“So I had to be careful. I recognised the responsibility that, whether I liked it or not, I had to accept whatever the obligation was. That was to behave in a manner, to carry myself in such a professional way, as if there ever is a reflection, it’s a positive one.” - Peyton Manning at halftime when the Broncos trailed 24-0 to the Chargers. Unwavered, Manning came out in the second half to work another “Monday Night Miracle” and lead a 35-24 comeback win.

“In my case, the body of work stands for itself... I think my work has been representative of me as a man. History passes the final judgment.” - Ray Lewis. If we’ve seen the last of him on the field, I’m glad to say I saw the entire career of the greatest linebacker of his generation.
