Mayaguana is fully prepared to take action once Hurricane Sandy hits, but most residents are waiting to see what happens, Island Administrator Lavon Harris-Smith told the Tribune.

According to Mrs. Harris-Smith, the island is experiencing tropical storm force winds, but no rain as yet.

"We're receiving high winds but no rain yet. But we have four shelters that have already been activated and we have transportation in place for those persons needed to the shelters," she said.

Mrs Harris-Smith explained that residents are monitoring the situation before they take action, but the shelters are already prepared.

"At this time there are no persons in the shelters. As you know, people wait for the last minute and monitor the weather. But we have all the relevant agencies on hand," she said.

"As you know, they don't take action until they actually see the winds and the rains. But we've alerted everyone and advised everyone. That's the most we can do."

The Ministry of Social Services and the Red Cross have representatives on the islands, with the latter going from door-to-door offering tips to residents on how to make it through the storm, Mrs Harris-Smith explained.

She also noted that the elderly residents who wished to be transported to the shelters have been picked up in an armoured truck and are safely in the shelters.
