Mom's death blamed on hospital bug

Astrid Bodie, who was killed by a bacteria in Princess Margaret Hospital, her daughter claims.

A WOMAN mourning the death of her mother claims it was caused by the deadly bacteria that killed two premature babies and infected six others at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Astrid Bodie claimed PMH officials informed her that her mother, Nathalie Lundy, died on Monday from “the super bug in the Intensive Care Unit” following a surgery.

The hospital has reportedly been battling the Acinetobacter Baumannii bug since July.

In a Facebook post, she said: “The PMH officials told me that she died from it. So maybe they shared this info with me because they thought I was going quietly in the night,” Ms Bodie said. “But I bet (they are) sorry now, hey, cause I will scream as loud as possible.”

As she began to tell others of her story, “so many people” have contacted her and said their loved ones have also died from the same bacteria, she claimed, stating: “This thing is bigger than I even imagined.”

To add insult to injury, following the death of her mother, PMH reportedly delivered her an almost $9,000 medical bill, and told her it was not the final bill, she said.

“If I don’t laugh I will surely cry,” Ms Bodie said of the $8,956.11 statement.

“The reason why she was there is because they almost kill her with an infection called sepsis after she had a surgery, then because of the infection she had to have a blood transfusion before having a surgery to save her life cause the infection burst her bladder,” she said. “She went in ICU to recover (and) was healing very well (but) then she caught the super bug that killed her. Now I owe them – wow!”

Ms Bodie attached shocking photos of her mother, showing the deceased’s badly swollen face, which she called “the face of pain, suffering and death.”

Ms Bodie said PMH has since denied the claim that her mother died from Acinetobacter Baumannii.

The Tribune was unable to contact PMH officials for comment.

The Public Hospital Authority directed inquiries to the Ministry of Health, however top officials there could not be reached.

Media reports attribute an earlier statement to the Public Hospital Authority, in which it is claimed an autopsy is pending, but in which Ms Lundy’s death is attributed to complications following her surgery.
