VETERAN politician and former FNM MP Pierre Dupuch yesterday said Edison Key should not be criticised or punished for “going against” his party but applauded for following his conscience.

Key was the only Free National Movement member of parliament not to join in the opposition’s walkout in the House of Assembly during the debate on the Stem Cell Research and Therapy Bill. He also did not attend the party’s mini rally at FNM Headquarters on Mackey Street last night.

When asked why he did not join his FNM counterparts in their protest, the Central and South Abaco MP said: “It doesn’t make sense, I am representing the people, I think for myself.”

Mr Dupuch said he stands with Mr Key because members of parliament have an obligation to the people first, then their party.

“What he did is something I have always maintained. I have done the same thing. You are elected to represent the people and you are not bound by the party decision every time the party votes. You do not have to vote for the party,” he said.

“Most times you vote with the party but if it is a matter of conscience and presents a problem for you, then you do what is best for the people you represent.

“You should not have to do what the party wants, just because you are a member. I did the same things and everyone was shocked because apparently it was the first time that happened. I was a backbencher when the government voted on long line fishing, I voted against it, I did not stand with the party and no action was taken against me.

“This is a choice and it should be acceptable.”

When asked last night if Mr Key would be reprimanded by the party for his actions, Deupty Leader Loretta Butler-Turner said the issue will go before the FNM council.

They should have never accepted him in the first place. Key was a LOP PLP. Can't get dirtier than that....

The FNM was born out of the PLP and it adopted a UBP ideology; so here we are today.
