Celebrating 45 years of dance and theatre

The Bahamas Dance Theatre is gearing up for its Christmas musical production, In Retrospect: Our Living Legacy of Dance.

This original work features students, alumni, parents and teachers of the school and will be directed by Gillian Springer, with evening performances on December 20 and 21, and a matinee on December 21.

The school is in its 45th year and is celebrating the milestone in this unique way. Productions are held every two years and bring all the elements of Broadway to Bahamian audiences.

In this exciting upbeat musical, the school reflects on its 45 years and tells its history to the new generation of aspiring dancers and the community at large. In the grand tradition of BDT founding artistic director, the late Shirley Hall Bass, the talents of the 150 member cast will entertain families with excerpts from an impressive list of past productions. Spectacular scenes from children’s fairytales and fables such as Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Oliver Twist, the Candy Man, Ali Baba and so many more, will be brought to the Dundas stage in living colour and pageantry.

The school will also honour stalwarts who have contributed to the work and success of this nonprofit performing arts school since its inception. Honourees include, founding members Jane Adderley, Angelina Davis, Eldica Moss along with former dance instructor, Cherie Pinder and long time advocate, playwright and musical director, Pastor Leroy “Tinkle” Hanna. Recognition will be given posthumously to the late Erma Grant-Smith, Valerie Dean, and Shirley Hall Bass. The show is dedicated to the memory of the late Patricia “Patsy” McKinney, founding member and past treasurer of the school’s board.

The event is expected to provide approximately two fun-filled hours of adventure and enjoyment. Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern Dance and Gymnastics and wonderful music will be on display.
