Gun violence on agenda at Baptist mid-winter convention

THE Progressive National Baptist Convention is holding its mid-winter board meeting and adjourned session at the Wyndham Nassau Resort and Crystal Palace Casino.

Convention president Dr Carroll A Baltimore Sr is in attendance, along with first vice president Dr James C Perkins.

Dr Timothy Stewart, of Bethel Baptist Church, who is the Convention’s second vice-president, is the host pastor.

In his message to attendees, the president said: “As we meet in the Bahamas, we are mindful of so many tragic events that have gripped our hearts in 2012. The ever-increasing and senseless gun violence across (the United States) is unacceptable. In particular, the recent murder of small children in Newtown, CT is yet another accounting of lives being snuffed out innocently.

“In America, at least 32 persons are killed every day due to gun violence, which totals more than 10,000 persons being killed annually in America.

“This is more than the total number of soldiers killed in the Iraq War. PNBC will have the opportunity to speak out on the critical topic of gun violence during the next several weeks, and I solicit your support.”

Among the featured speakers is local pastor Dr Ivan Butler Jr, senior pastor of Kemp Road Ministries.
