No change to preamble

SUPPORTING the idea that no changes should be made to the preamble of the Bahamas Constitution, the Constitutional Commission rejected the idea that the reference to Christian and spiritual values should to be enshrined as part of the body of the Constitution.

The commission described the discussion surrounding proposed changes to the preamble to the Bahamas Constitution as one of the most “riveting” points of public debate.

“With the possible exception of the discussion revolving around the death penalty and retention of the Privy Council (which were sometimes unfortunately conflated) and the question of citizenship in the Haitian immigrant context, no other aspect of the Constitution came close to garnering the kind of attention as the Preamble did,” the commission said.
