BGF hosts amateur event

THE Bahamas Golf Federation hosted its National Amateur Champions Tournament, which comprised of the Prime Minister’s Cup, President’s Cup and the National Amateur Championship.

The event was held at the Grand Lucayan Reef Golf Course in Grand Bahama June 8-9.

The field was contested by a number of players from Grand Bahama, Treasure Cay and Nassau. Though the field was limited to 32 contestants, the conditions were damp and windy and the competition was very stiff.

There was a sudden death playoff between Bruce LaFleur and Dashwill Williams to determine the winner of the President’s Cup. They started on hole 16 and both scored a 6.

On hole 17, the wind was very strong so Williams picked up his driver and went for the green on the par 3. Unfortunately, he hit the ball in the water.

In response, LeFleur picked up an iron and hit his ball left of the green and away from the water. He then chipped on and 2-putted for a bogey, which allowed him to secure the title for the President’s Cup. Both players had the same score on hole 18.

The federation, however, noted that it was a bit disappointing that they didn’t have any of their junior players participating as those from Nassau were sitting their school exams.

Chris Lewis, golf pro and manager of the Reef Golf Club, was commended for running an excellent tournament and for his all-around assistance.

Thanks were also expressed to Calvin Cooper and Gina Rolle for assistance with maintaining the scores on a real time basis. Cooper was considered the encyclopedia of the rules of golf that kept everyone on the right track.

The tournament was sponsored in part by Kirk Williams of Carpet World, Gus Cartwright of Sunrise Wash House, Horace Miller of Centreville Food Market, EN Mosko and RH Culmer.
