Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu celebrates 50 years

The Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu celebrated 50 years of service throughout the Bahamas on March 31.

Since 1964, the Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu has actively supported the community, especially those in need.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We are proud of our most prominent activities such as the horticultural/agricultural shows, producing Kiwanis dolls for hospitalised children, placing major emphasis on our sponsored leadership programmes within our schools, construction of a home at the All Saints Camp, reading programmes, breakfast programmes and so much more.

“The club was charted by 38 men and of these only one is still alive and active today and that is none other than Past President Carlton Jones. Hence, all of our celebrations were centred around giving thanks to him for giving so many years of dedicated service.

“We began our celebrations by offering praise and thanks to God for 50 years at Past President Carlton’s church; The Most Holy Trinity Anglican church. We were warmly welcomed by Father Mark Fox and were encouraged to continue to be servants of God by helping the less fortunate one child, one community at a time.”

On Tuesday, March 25, the club held a dinner under the patronage of Mr Jones as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The spokesman said: “It was a night to remember whereby we honoured our past presidents and had reflections by Distinguished Lieutenant Governor Stafford Coakley, our first female president Distinguished President Sylvia Scriven and Distinguished President Nerika Burrows, who reminisce on many of the service projects over the years and some that are still notable today such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Mall at Marathon.

“The 50th President, Verenique Cunningham, thanked the past presidents for building such a strong foundation and admonish the members to continue to be a beacon of strength for our nation by serving the less fortunate throughout the Bahamas as the needs some fifty years ago are so much greater now, therefore, we must strive to make a difference in our society.

“Finally, our Lieutenant Governor Christine King complimented the club for its achievements over the years, she applaud all Members, Directors, Officers and Lieutenant Governors for their most valuable contributions. She challenged us to continue to join our hands and recommit ourselves to the cause of pressing forward, onward to another 50years onto our 100th celebrations.”
