Ill-considered comments

EDITOR,The Tribune

I refer to the article Gomez denies interference in resignation of DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) in your Monday, 18th August edition.

You quote Mr Gomez as saying: “We (the PLP) were concerned about the process that led to the appointment of a foreigner, when we became the government we were faced with a fait accompli. She was already appointed and we had no interest in terminating her contract and incurring extra liability for the government, so we worked with her.”

DPPs are appointed on the basis that they are competent to direct public prosecutions in accordance with the law – free from fear or favour or interference by anyone.

Mr Gomez’s remarks are unfortunate. The DPP did a good job and she is commended for her contribution.

Since Mr Gomez is so concerned about the “appointment of a foreigner”, perhaps he can tell us if any members of cabinet have citizenship in any country other than the Bahamas.

This is why it is so hard for Bahamians to accept that the PLP is sincere about the referendum. we all know they are xenophobic to the bone. They hate foreigners with a passion, yet a couple of Cabinet ministers are married to foreigners. Damien's mother is a foreigner
