Poor choices by government

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Since winning the last election, the present government has made a series of poor decisions which has left a bad taste in the mouths of the electorate.

One wonders if there is an ounce of wisdom in the government collectively.

For almost a decade Bahamians have been talking about the possibility of the Cuban economy gaining momentum from a more relaxed attitude of the Americans. Recently, the American government took the first steps towards establishing a relationship that will result in the strengthening of the Cuban economy. Impending negative consequences on the Bahamian economy looms.

The question now is what will our government do? It has already squandered myriad opportunities to grow the Bahamian economy, control crime, stifle cronyism, etc, and by its borrowing has placed the country into a precarious economic situation.

Now, despite an expected economic downturn in 2015, it seems intent to cause a further contracture of the Bahamian economy by introducing VAT.

Will the government learn from its litany of mistakes and consider postponing the implementation of VAT until a better assessment can be made of the status of the Bahamian economy in 2015? Based on their record the answer is probably a resounding no!
