COMMUNITY leaders in Bain and Grants Town will unite under the auspices of Urban Renewal this weekend for a peace march to commemorate a new anti-crime campaign.

The march will feature key speakers from various church leaders in the area and the Urban Renewal band, according to Inspector Anthony Rolle, the officer in charge of Urban Renewal’s Bain and Grants Town branch.

“We have embarked on an anti-crime campaign,” said Mr Rolle, “which will commence with a peace march this coming Saturday. Beginning at 1pm we will assemble at the old City Market parking lot on Market Street. Our intent is to canvass the entire community.

“We’ll distribute preventative flyers, we will speak with our parents, our young men, boys, and girls on the dangers of firearms. Also during that time we will speak to the young men and say to them that if they intend to have a successful and productive life within our community possessing a gun will not be the way to go. It will only lead to imprisonment, to death, and to the grave.”

He added: “We would also like to say that the real victims of guns and violence are actually the children that are left behind. So we’re appealing to the public to come out and support.”

Mr Rolle said the march will make several stops in areas designated as “hot spots”, such as Taylor and Milton Streets.
