MORE than 4,000 children are participating in the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s summer camp, which officially opened yesterday.

The camp, which is in its 21st year, will accommodate children between eight and 17 for various activities, including speech competitions, basketball, swimming, music and etiquette classes.

The six-week camp runs daily from 9am to 1pm and the government has hired more than 50 college students to work as facilitators at the camp and help to mentor the students.

National Security Minister Dr Bernard Nottage encouraged the students to take advantage of all the programmes the camp will offer and to use their time to improve whatever skills they may have.

This year, the camp under the theme “Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” honoured Sir Arlington Butler, who was one of the original organisers of the programme.

Sir Arlington said the idea for the camp was based out of love for the children and the need to see as many of them as possible move in the right direction and become functioning members of society.
