Flag of convenience

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I recently went on a cruise on the Regent Seven Seas Navigator and the first thing we noticed was the Bahamian flag flying proudly from the stern of the ship along with Nassau in large letters as the port where the ship was registered. So I asked the cruise director how many Bahamian crew members were on board.

“Not sure,” he said, I think zero, but I will arrange for you to have dinner with the Human Resources Manager and she will be able to tell you.”

My wife and I did have dinner and the answer was still zero. She said we do not get any applications from Bahamians and she thought the rules for Bahamian seamen are quite strict. However, it seems to me that with the number of Bahamian registered ships sailing the high seas and the unemployment numbers in the Bahamas not exactly in the comfort zone that some effort might be made to get Bahamians employed on ships that fly the Bahamas Flag of Convenience. I would love to have an answer.

Ships hire from very poor countries and pay them crap. A Bahamian would ask for "normal" money and would never see the job. Simple as that....
