Hands for Hunger food drive

A team of RBC employees recently hosted a food drive in partnership with the Hands For Hunger charity.

The 14 employees, from the Securities and Lending Compliance Centre, aimed to gather 200lbs of canned goods and non-perishable items - but not only did they hit their target, they also brought in an extra $600 cash.

RBC also provided a Day of Service grant of $1,000 to Hands for Hunger.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of the RBC Food Drive. The fortitude of the Securities and Lending Compliance Centre team is commendable as is the generosity of the community who wholeheartedly supported this initiative,” said Jan Knowles, manager of corporate communications at the bank.

“This donation, equivalent to 1,800 meals, will be far-reaching once distributed to Hands For Hunger’s network of partnering agencies, a programme we are truly proud to support,” Ms Knowles said.

Local non-profit organisation Hands For Hunger is able to equate every pound of food donated to one meal back into the community, either through its fresh, surplus Food Rescue Programme or through the collection of canned goods.

As a result of RBC’s continued support, The H4H Shelves scheme - which aims to gather canned and non-perishable goods - have been replenished just in time for a large distribution of shelf-stable items to the charity’s 13 recipient outreach agencies. In turn, these social service agencies provide approximately 9,500 meals per week to Bahamians seeking emergency food assistance.

“Our food rescue, food storage, education and awareness programmes are able to develop with the passing of each year largely in part tof RBC’s unwavering support. We are so grateful for their enthusiastic commitment to the fight against hunger,” said Abigail Asgaralli, executive director of Hands For Hunger.

As the organisation gears up for World Hunger Day, globally recognised on May 28 each year, there are many ways to get involved and effect positive change in the community. For more information on upcoming initiatives, call the Hands For Hunger office at 327-1660 or email info@handsforhunger.org.
