Minnis, the grand flip-flopper

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I watched in amazement a video on YouTube put out by Dr Hubert Minnis. He basically admits that he lacks charisma and is a poor speaker. But he says he gets things done. What has he done? Very little.

Most of the FNM debt from the last election still isn’t paid off. Quite a number of FNMs are leaving the party and the DNA is gaining on the FNM because of his poor leadership.

He promised to push a measure on the death penalty through the House of Assembly. Nothing has come of it. He promised to run the Government from the Opposition. Dr Minnis is plenty talk and little action. Talk, talk, talk!

More and more he is reminding many people of Perry Christie. Those who he promises things to should be very wary of those promises.

It is not a matter of either/or when it comes to being a good speaker and being a person of action. Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham was charismatic, a good speaker, competent and a man of action. Dr Minnis is none of these.

By the way, why is his video filled with so many grammatical mistakes? If he can’t even produce a proper video free of the most basic mistakes how can he do things that require even more competence? He seems politically hopeless. It doesn’t seem like he is teachable. He is making the same basic mistakes he was making from Day One.

If this is the poor quality of his leadership campaign, the PLP will destroy him and the FNM in a general election.

Dr Minnis goes on to say that he isn’t wishy-washy or a flip-flopper. The facts don’t bear this out. He says he always was for term limits for the prime minister. The problem with this is that he supported Hubert Ingraham for four terms.

He jumped the gun on the gambling referendum, then had to backtrack and flip-flop, then he continued to flip and flop and flop and flip throughout the gambling referendum discussion.

Then with the gender equality debate he flip-flopped all over the place. He had an agreement with Perry Christie which he conveniently broke when he got some opposition, and then he seemed to go back to his original position. Who knows what position he’ll have next.

He appeared to go along with a salary increase for Members of Parliament, then flip-flopped on this when there was strong opposition. Might his position change again when it’s convenient?

He said in his video that a wise man changes his mind when given new information. The problem is that on the issues mentioned and on other issues, he had all the information he needed, and most, if not all of the facts he needed at the time to take a position.

The point is that he just didn’t have the competence to make a good and thoughtful decision in the first place. He doesn’t seem to be able to stand by any principles.

He flip-flops at the first sign of opposition and at the drop of a hat. He flip-flops as a matter of convenience. In this way, Hubert Minnis is just like Perry Christie.

Dr Minnis is now one of the greatest flip-floppers in politics. This isn’t wisdom. This is just plain old flip-flopping and most Bahamians see it for exactly what it is.
