Cronyism in government

EDITOR, The Tribune.

When a particular party wins, be it PLP or FNM, many positions are filled in Government with friends and supporters who are untrained for the position they are given and indifferent to the work they are assigned.

Contracts based on loyalty or patronage rather than merit usually produces shoddy work, unresponsive governance and a lot of public resentment. Despite this, cronyism has infected governments throughout this country’s history.

Political parties believe that because of electoral victories the mandate of the party is to hand out jobs. Because of this mandate, appointments are routinely given out as rewards for political support. The consequence of this system is excessive turnover as each leader replaces the previous administration with his own people. This results in a lack of institutional memory and experience, which exacerbates bureaucratic malaise and inefficiency.

Cronyism not only involves patronage hiring, but on the awarding of no bid contracts. Usually Governments are required to award contracts based on open and competitive bidding.

Political corruption remains a significant problem in The Bahamas and Governments must work hard to end practices that fuel the appearance of undue influence.

Both the current and future administrations must resist the temptation to make appointments based on favouritism and political loyalty.

Ha, good one. The politicians must be killing themselves laughing. This small minority of corrupt, immoral, and unethical Politically Exposed People are raping and pillaging this country at the expense of the majority and the Nation. Majority rule is a SHAM, we just traded white masters for black masters, the majority still getting beat with the same stick!

http://www.thenassauguardian.com/news...">http://www.thenassauguardian.com/news... This is what the Nation gets when cronies and party faithful are hired to do a job, NOTHING. So Urban hires these crony contractors, who arte paid in full yet the have not done the job. Somebody should go to jail over this. We are forced to pay taxes, why can't we force the government to be mindful of our m,oney. The P.M. in his corrupt dealings says he hopes his party supporters get most of the government contracts, well I hope you suckers end up in JAIL. THIS IS STEALING! Why are the police not involved????
