TROPICAL Storm Erika, which formed in the central Atlantic Ocean on Monday, is approaching the Leeward Islands and forecasters say it may gain strength.
The storm's maximum sustained winds on Tuesday were reported by the US National Hurricane Centre at 45 mph as it tracked west around 20mph about 730 miles east of the Leeward Islands.
Tropical storm watches have been issued for portions of the Leeward Islands including Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Saba, St Eustatius, St Maarten, Guadeloupe, St Martin and St Barthelemy.
A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.

The predictions are that Erika will hit Florida which means it will pass thru the Bahamas. But a cooling down of temperatures may affect its ability to strengthen. Many U.S. Cities are recording record LOW temperatures today.

The jet stream has been dipping further south and will continue through the weekend suggesting that Erika will be steered north and east away from The Bahamas and the US coast.
