AS they prepare for the completion of another competitive calendar year, Varel Clarke-Davis will be the next president charged with the responsibility of taking the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association front office back to a respectable level.

After the past school year ended with just a skeleton crew in office under the administration of immediate past president Kevin ‘KJ’ Johnson, Davis was voted in as the new president, defeating Penial Bain during the recent elections for a two-year term. Clarke is just the second female to serve as president, following Edna Forbes, who held the reigns a few years ago.

“It feels good. I didn’t campaign at all,” Clarke said of her election. “I just went in, got nominated and the members accepted me. I was here before as a secretary in the last administration, although I didn’t complete the full tenure because of a conflict. So I know how to run the association and I’m looking forward to working with the new executives.”

The other members of the executive team are Kenny Moxey as the first vice president, Dereck Cummings as the second vice president, Tia Rolle as treasurer, Terrance King as assistant treasurer, Keisha Miller as the secretary general and Shakera Farrington as the assistant secretary. “I think the persons who have been elected is a very good one,” said Davis, who serves as a physical education teacher at CH Reeves Junior High School. “We have some people who have served in administration before like Keisha Miller and Terrance King. So they bring some very interesting discussions to the table.”

The newly elected board is being commissioned by the Government Secondary Schools Principal’s Association and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids,” Clarke said. “So whatever we do, we want to keep them in the forefront.”

The GSSSA is currently conducting its basketball season, having recently completed volleyball. At this stage, Davis said everything is going quite smooth and they are looking forward to some exciting games before they break for the Christmas holiday.

“On any given day, any of the top teams can be beaten,” said Clarke, who coaches the CH Reeves Raptors junior girls’ team. “It’s a very competitive season so far this year.”

The GSSSA will take a break for the Christmas holiday this week and resume play when school re-opens in January, 2016. Still left to be completed on its calendar are track and field, soccer and softball.
