FREE National Movement Leader Dr Hubert Minnis yesterday criticised Prime Minister Perry Christie for not publicly condemning prominent attorney Wayne Munroe for suggesting that the country should start “flogging” illegal immigrants.

Dr Minnis said Mr Christie’s “silence” on addressing Mr Munroe’s “brutal and callous comments” suggests that the government agrees with Mr Munroe, QC, on the matter. He said Mr Christie should “strongly state his position” with regards to Mr Munroe’s comments so that the public “would not be left with the perception that his failure to admonish Mr Munroe is further evidence of (Mr Christie’s) weak leadership.”

However, Dr Minnis said the controversy surrounding Mr Munroe’s comments is likely “another issue which the Christie government would seek to sweep under the carpet”.

On Sunday, Mr Munroe, QC, told The Tribune that officials in this country should begin “caning” minors and flogging those over 18 who are caught entering the country illegally.

Mr Munroe also said that while “flogging” people may appear to be brutal, it would effectively serve as both a physical and psychological barrier for people seeking to continuously enter the country illegally.

He was contacted by The Tribune after he made several controversial posts on Facebook. In one post on the social media site, Mr Munroe also said he believes that the “price is too low” for immigration offences in The Bahamas and suggested that if illegal immigrants believed “we tortured and killed them, they might not come”.

“I would call upon Mr Christie to make a public statement condemning Mr Munroe for his brutal and callous comments and strongly state his position so that the public would not be left with the perception that his failure to admonish Mr Munroe is further evidence of the prime minister’s weak leadership,” Dr Minnis said in a statement.

He added: “We cannot continue to have a prime minister who brags about his government’s efforts on humanitarian and environmental issues on the international stage while he continues to ignore such issues at home.

“The FNM calls on (Mr Christie) to address this matter immediately with the understanding that silence gives consent.”

On Tuesday, Bahamas Bar Association President Elsworth Johnson condemned Mr Munroe’s statements, saying the “despicable” comments are “diametrically opposed to the preservation of human dignity”.

Grand Bahama Human Rights Association President Fred Smith, QC, has also called on the Christie administration to break its silence on Mr Munroe’s “vile and dehumanising” comments. He said the Christie administration should speak out against the “insane claims that could destroy the reputation of the Bahamas.”

Mr Smith also questioned why Immigration and Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell has remained quiet on the matter. He said Mr Mitchell should use the opportunity to make public policy clear.

Why don't we ask the tourist who come here and support our economy if we should should be flogging migrants. Canada is accepting 25,000 Syrian migrants even in the face of international terrorist attacks (Canadian Parliament was also attack this year).

The Haitian who are coming here aren't even coming "TO" the bahamas, they're trying to get "OUT" of Haiti. You know the situation in Haiti?

These people would be considered refugees in countries that actually has some respect human rights... here they are considered Criminals who deserve harsher punishment.

Sometimes i wonder if all these would be Christian round here are actually Satanist, because they definitely harbour evil and inhumane thoughts

While I totally agree that people fleeing war torn countries and poverty should be assisted in as best as the receiving country can do so, I am not quite certain with your assertion that they are not trying to come to The Bahamas. If they were merely passing through, there would not be more Haitians than Bahamians in North Eleuthera for one.

Exactly the mentality of a Fred Smith follower. Disregard the fact that The Bahamas, like any other country, is entitled to enforce immigration laws. Next, compare apples and oranges. The Bahamas, like Canada, should be in a position to pick and choose immigrants and to offer shelter to people from nations in distress if in a position to do so. The Bahamas is in no position to do so, thanks to decades of unchecked illegal immigration by people from Haiti and their enablers.

Economic refugees (i.e opportunists) are not treated the same as political refugees by most countries, even the ones that "respect human rights". This is why the U.S. turns their boats around. Regardless of why they're leaving and where they're trying to get to...they end up in Bahamas it cannot sustain the influx.

Wayne Munroe and Leslie Miller are merely distractions to take the heat off of NHI. If you have not realized that is how the PLP works, smoke and mirrors. They are deceitful as the devil himself!

For once Perry and crew are doing the right thing. This nonsense comment deserves no traction from government...Munroe is not an elected official.

Fred Smith is a FNM . He wanted to run for the house in Grand Bahama His Delivery Boy did not allow him to do so , Why did Minnis not condemn Fred Smith when he compared the Bahamas to Adolf Hitler's Germany. Now Minnis may be out of it . But he has to know that Mr: Munroe is not a part of the Government. He is a private citizen.. But then again he may not know.

The article in The Bahamas Weekly is entitled Minnis: Christie Far Too Slow on Munroe Comments. It has been about a week since the comments were made. What took Dr. Minnis so long to respond if he felt so deeply regarding what he calls, Munroe's barbaric statement? This is all nothing but political posturing from a man who recently said hanging must be enforced.
