Humane Society does a great job

EDITOR, The Tribune.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi

When my husband and I were looking for our ideal “place in the sun”, we were thoroughly enchanted by Grand Bahama. One aspect of the island that impressed us most was the quality and effectiveness of the island’s Humane Society.

Overstretched and under-budgeted, it still did a wonderful job. Now we hear that their funding is being reduced. Worse, we were surprised to discover that the Government – usually the source of support to such efforts – gives nothing.

This situation can only end badly, and threatens to undermine any and all PR efforts to present the island as a first-class tourist destination. Certainly, the sight of sick and starving animals along the roadsides will turn animal lovers away in droves, change the charming atmosphere and “feel” of the island, and severely tarnish the reputation of all The Bahamas.

So true. The government gives nothing to the Humane Societies in the country. They are happy to let hard working volunteers both local and foreign work to contain the stray populations here. It is a disgrace.
