Two sides to Baha Mar story

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Baha Mar… reading  your back to back Editorials you paint a wicked story about China State Construction and not a whisper (this writer is sure you have a lot of inside information) as to the other side of the equation which is or has been clearly the key to the work-slow up and question as to when Baha Mar will officially open.

Baha Mar has not denied they owe China State Construction or missed their initial payments to EXIM, China on the development loan.

I recall month after month the Baha Mar spokesperson in front of the local TV camera saying everything was going extremely well – on schedule and on budget but suddenly everything seems to have collapsed and nothing is right and the developer is dissatisfied with his contractor. Someone seems to have been fast asleep on the job.

Anyone who has built even the smallest of houses knows once you give the plans and  details to your contractor and settle on a price that’s it – if you change you know the  contract is void and the contractor will charge you for the inconvenience.

The public has certain rights in this matter as Baha Mar were given over $400m customs concessions if not more. Surely the public has certain rights to be informed before there could be the announcement that the project has gone into liquidation?

There can’t be a single Bahamian who wishes that however bad they feel about the concept and size of Baha Mar as it was criticised from stage (1) that it was all too big.

Editor - I hope in a day or so you will write informing the public of the other side of the crisis at Baha Mar and be fair in your commentary. There is no doubt there are two sides.

The Izmirlian family owns some prime London properties which could easily be sold-off as they did their project for US$1.79 billion to Qatari investors, but has Izmirlian Senior seen the light and now has decided not to place his family fortune in possible jeopardy?

I certainly hope everything will be worked out, but certainly we have to hold our breathe.
