Adults the cause of society’s decay

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The Bahamas has come full circle. We have seen all of what we have been doing ourselves come back in “full colour”.

The Bahamas is a promiscuous society. We have sex rampant in the church and no one addresses it. We know who is sweeethearting who. In many cases, the pastor is leading the way. This is not isolated to a few. While there are many good men and women of the cloth, too many types of rogues still occupy the pulpit.

We see the various men and women who exploit their position in the church to pounce on the innocent, vulnerable and the weak. When are we going to address it, instead of sweeping it under the proverbial carpet to save the pastor?

The hypocrisy is too blatant. We know of the incest and molestation, too little or nothing is said. Especially if the culprit is a “big timer” the silence is deafening.

We blame our youth for all manner of evil, but we are not honest enough to admit that we were bad examples. We do not confess that we have done precious little toward being a good enough role model for our children.

We steal and rob from our employers, and our children know this. What do you expect them to do? We have many affairs and the children know, but we are telling them not to be “foot loose and fancy free”. We commit crimes, call our friends, “get off scot free” and act like nothing happened, while our impressionable children watch.

It is time we “catch ourselves!” We say we were not like our children are today, but what do we expect when they witness us disrespecting others and even ourselves. These children emulate us. How can we expect them to be any better when we did and are doing nothing to point them in the right direction?

We must do better. Our slackness in the 60s, 70s, 80, and 90s are now manifesting themselves. We know what damage we have done, some were sly, but few were innocent.

To fix the deterioration, we are now experiencing, we must go back to the cause. It is us who are responsible for the whirlwind we are experiencing.

I confess, I was not an angel, I could have done better, I could have been a more responsible father, but to say that I was better than the children are today would be a lie. I had a good look in the mirror, and must be honest with myself.

I am now relieved.

Every dollar put in the "plate" at any church in the Bahamas, ends up costing this country $10 in future needed social services, psychiatric help at Sandilands, pre-natal and post-natal care for infants and unwanted children, rent assistance and food assistance from Social Services, and lack of employable citizens to be overrun by foreign work-permit holders who did well in their foreign schools while our children get D-Averages in overcrowded pig-styes.

But, go ahead, pay me no attention. Keep giving the pastors money.

The two biggest evils in The Bahamas are the government and the church. Both are infested with criminals and con men that prey on the ignorant and downtrodden.
