Pride in Bahamians

EDITOR, The Tribune.

One time ago we advertised the natural beauty of our country and the friendliness of our people as the national resources of our country.

I must admit that over the years I have become somewhat jaded with the latter.

However, something happened today that revived my pride in the spirit of the Bahamian people. It made my day at a time when so many Bahamians appear to be rude and disgusting.

One of my employees told me that her daughter had been a petal dropper in a wedding yesterday. Of course, I was intrigued at who would be getting married on a Tuesday.

Turns out a young couple from Ireland travelled to Nassau last week to get married.

They were on Saunders Beach on Saturday, where they met a few Bahamians and lamented that because of the expense they could not bring any family members to share this very special experience.

The Bahamians, who had never previously met this young couple, pulled together WITH THEIR OWN MONEY.

The women cooked native dishes, including hefty amounts of lobster and grouper; friends and neighbours were invited to make up the bridal party and guests; a photographer and videographer were hired; and a professional DJ was located. The wedding was held on Saunders Beach yesterday and proved to be a grand event. The young couple did not have to pay for anything.

They will return home with wonderful memories of the generosity and friendliness of the Bahamian people.

The recounting of this story made my day. I hope that it makes yours.
