Deadman’s Cay, Colonel Hill and Spring Point airports still closed

ALL of the country’s airports except three are open in the aftermath of Hurricane Joaquin.

Minister of Transport and Aviation Glenys Hanna Martin told The Tribune yesterday that the airports in Deadman’s Cay in Long Island, Colonel Hill in Crooked Island and Spring Point in Acklins were still closed because they were “underwater”.

“Presently, all government airports are open except three,” she said. “There are three airports in critical areas that were hard hit which has affected our ability to get air traffic into there. But Bahamians are finding a way and relief (efforts) are getting in there by various avenues.”

The airport in Stella Maris, Long Island is open but is located on a part of the island that was least impacted by the storm, she said. Travel from the northern to the southern part of Long Island, which was damaged from Joaquin, has been impacted by flood water or debris.

Mrs Hanna Martin said she heard reports that Family Island docks held up well during the category four hurricane, but said an official report was needed from the Ministry of Works to confirm this.
