Too close for comfort

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Your front page today, October 14, speaks volumes about our national depravity.

The owner of a “still unlicensed” numbers racket, passing a very large cheque to the Prime Minister for Hurricane Relief. And both men are smiling!

The people of this country, including its religious leaders, expressed their wish that numbers houses should not be legitimised, and I have no doubt, that if they were asked again today, the answer would be the same resounding no.

Yet we, as a country, are accepting money that has come from the people of this country who can least afford it?

To me there is no difference in this modus operandi than people like Christopher Coke aka “Dudas”, Samuel Knowles aka “Ninety”, or any of the New York Mafia bosses, who lavished their criminal proceeds on the local populace to buy their acceptance and goodwill and safety from the law.

The law-abiding citizens of this country have demonstrated from their pockets and brow sweat that they can more than adequately respond to the needs of the dispossessed in the eastern islands.

This is grotesque! Christie should give the money back and let the donor share it with the poor fools who play his numbers game.
