Question over parking garage permission

THE proposed development of a multi-level parking garage in the downtown area of Nassau has caught the attention of concerned citizens, many of whom are claiming that the project’s site plan application was fast-tracked, with little public notice given.

The Department of Physical Planning, based in the Ministry of Works and Urban Development, began posting notices about the Neworld One Bay Street Ltd project in local newspapers earlier this month, requesting that people interested in commenting on the construction do so within 21 days of the first notice being sent out.

Despite that 21-day commentary moratorium, construction is already underway at the site, immediately west of the British Colonial Hilton along Marlborough Street, leading many to question the legitimacy of the project.

When contacted by The Tribune yesterday, acting director of Physical Planning Charles Zonicle said he couldn’t recall when exactly the public notice was sent out for publication. He explained that it had been sent out in recent weeks and the site plans were available for public view at his office.

The Tribune published the notice for the first time on October 13; however, construction at the site is clearly visible and seems to have started weeks ago.

Christie now displays all of the traits commonly found in corrupt dictators who feign concern for their subjects, but don't give a damn about them.

I don't get how anything on this project was approved. I looked at the architectural style of the buildings as I headed east on Bay from Junkanoo Beach, this shiny glass Pointe behemoth will stick out like a sore thumb in downtown area. What's the plan? Bulldoze the rest of downtown and make it equally as shiny?

The rest of downtown may be considered too shanty...

If we bulldoze illegal shanty town, shouldn't we also bulldoze illegal parking structures?

If this project was being done by Bahamian investors, they would still be waiting for a meeting with town planning much less have the approvals. It is very telling that the Chinese are going full steam ahead within months of buying the BC. For a Bahamian to get permits and approvals would have taken years if ever. There is a growing hatred of government that is simmering just below the surface and if government does not straighten up and fly right I fear the worst for our Bahama land!
