To a man who gave so much

EDITOR, The Tribune.

For Mike Wallace

You always walked fast, for your journey was long—

You always talked fast, for your time was short.

You were intelligent—wise and your countenance strong—

And you believed firmly in those things for which you fought.

Those of us fortunate to call you ‘friend’—

You taught to comfort and to care;

To come to the aid of our fellowmen,

And their pain and suffering share.

I wrongly assumed that you’d always be there—

To guide and council, whenever we call—

Or lend a patient, listening ear,

Perhaps correct and cushion, whenever we fall.

You planted many seeds—watered many a tree.

You will forever be survived by your humanity.

A “warrior” who always did what he had to do, said what he had to say—

Then in the dead of night—just softly slipped away.
