Celebration to highlight cathedral’s importance to Nassau

THE Endowment Trust of Christ Church Cathedral is planning an observance of Cathedral/Nassau Week from November 1-7.

This is aimed at creating a greater awareness of the historical tie between the City of Nassau and the Parish of Christ Church Cathedral.

This was premised on a Royal Order made by Her Majesty Queen Victoria of Great Britain on November 4, 1861.

Queen Victoria was also then head of the Church of England that extended throughout the colonies and included the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Royal Order mandated that the edifice of Christ Church become henceforth a cathedral. Nassau then became a city.

Dean of Christ Church Cathedral Patrick Adderley spoke about the importance of the observance of Cathedral/Nassau Week.

“As dean of Christ Church Cathedral, I believe that the celebration of Cathedral/Nassau Week is an excellent opportunity to recognise and affirm the religious and civic ties that have historically existed between the church and city,” he said.

It is proposed that the week will commence with an official service on Sunday, November 1.

The centre and high mark of the week’s events is proposed for Wednesday, November 4.

A ceremony will be held to commemorate the anniversary of the Royal Order.

During this ceremony, old merchants and business houses as well as straw vendors who have worked throughout the years and have engaged in business and commerce within the city precinct will be recognised.

It is also proposed that they would be given the first “Key to the City” and that other churches and Christian-based faith institutions within the city precincts would be honoured.

The week culminates with a street festival on George Street.

It is earmarked to be an annual fundraiser for Cathedral House and other Cathedral Endowment Trust projects.
