SAVE The Bays (STB) Chairman Joseph Darville has written to three of the largest international advocacy agencies in an effort to bring global attention to the “deplorable treatment” of environmental advocates in the Bahamas by the Christie administration.

In an open letter released to the press on Monday, Mr Darville said there were further efforts by the state to intimidate and threaten activists in The Bahamas over the past year and half.

Mr Darville, in the letter addressed to Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Amnesty International and the Robert F Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights, said the more recent attacks have taken on a more personal formant.

“The state, for its part, has failed to take action against developers who engage in unregulated development and has instead become increasingly hostile towards environmental advocates and their supporters,” he wrote.

Mr Darville detailed a number of recent occurrences in The Bahamas, including attacks by sitting MPs on STB members, accusations that STB concocted a plot to “destabilise the government” and threats of prosecution levelled at STB members for their work.

“Their private emails have been accessed and read aloud in Parliament by senior members of the government in an attempt to generate public hostility toward the group,” wrote Mr Darville.

“In the latest and most egregious attack, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Fred Mitchell threatened to have STB’s legal director, Fred Smith, imprisoned for ‘contempt of Parliament.’”

“It is noteworthy that this is the second time Minister Mitchell has threatened Mr Smith with imprisonment. In the first, Mitchell claimed that in his capacity as president of the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association (GBHRA) Smith was guilty of ‘criminal libel,’ a draconian and anachronistic charge which is considered obsolete in most democratic countries.”

Mr Darville said the activist community in The Bahamas has grown increasingly apprehensive in the face of the heightened and sustained animosity on the part of the Christie administration.

He stated that many activists have “very real fears for their safety and liberty.” Mr Darville added: “The atmosphere for advocacy in the country has never been more bleak.”

Mr Darville urged the groups to do “any and everything in its power” to bring attention to the “rapidly deteriorating situation”.

According to Mr Darville, international scrutiny is the only check that may “restrain increasingly hostile state actors before the situation spirals completely out of control”.

STB has come under fire by members of the Christie administration after court documents filed by the group alleged that Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard employed two “gang members” to carry out crimes against those who opposed further development at Nygard Cay.

On March 9, four STB directors - Mr Darville, Romi Ferreira, Mr Smith and Louis Bacon - and Rev CB Moss, who is not a STB member, filed an affidavit by Florida investigator John Joseph DiPaolo detailing Mr Nygard’s connection to Livingston “Toggie” Bullard and Wisler “Bobo” Davilma, the two men in question.

In recent weeks, members of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) have attempted to portray STB as a political faction disguised as an environmental group. Education Minister Jerome Fitzgerald described STB as a an organisation that purports to have one function when in fact it has political motivations, reading emails from members of the group in the House of Assembly to further his point.

The truth will come out, the more the disciple of the out spoken QC writes the more will be revealed. This situation is deep. Pintard has fallen already let us see who else will fall, The trap was set and persons who set the trap were caught in it. It would be a good idea for Mr: Darville to lay low and wait to see what happens. again Education is not common sense. The other day it was all about Jesus now he has taken another turn., to the devil no doubt.

When will real victims of the system in this country get the attention and justice they deserve?

A good question. I applaud the determination (and unfathomable courage) of persons like Mr. Darville who put their very lives on the line fighting for the rights of their fellow citizens.

Unfortunately, I do not see any help forthcoming from these international groups. The situation at (the formerly named) Her Majesty's Prison has been such as it is and worse off and on for decades - and I have never seen it covered on CNN or on the cover of any international magazine purporting human rights. Our very own churches do nothing to help these people either.

Perhaps there are no children of God housed at that prison? Why were the prisoners there not identified as being the spawn of Satan when they were delivered by the doctor at hospital or mid-wife? Why were they allowed to attend public school? Don't we have a policy in the school system not to allow attendance by children of Satan?

I say that with tongue-in-cheek - in order to demonstrate (try) how STUPID the church view is - to suggest that these people are not children of God. Are they? Are they not? If they are - then why are they being subjected to the treatment they are receiving? Even those that are guilty do not deserve it - let alone those who are simply held in remand. Not to mention that someone can be held in remand for up to 14 years without trial.

So - no - there will be no help coming to assist Mr. Darville in his plight. The Govt has these international organizations held in check - even more so - now to the point where they have just last week elected one of them to the international chairmanship of the IDB.

It's like Freddy Kruger stuck on a continuous repeat play loop.

Cry me a river. The reality of the situation is this - the PLP was not checking for Save the Bays all this time. Save the Bays isn't being terrorized, they are in the middle of a political war that they have a hand in creating. They decided to strike a political blow and the PLP - never to be outdone in how low they will go - decided to strike back. Am I supposed to cry if a bunch of adults are in a park throwing rocks at each other and one or the other gets hit? Getting hit is par for the course. And once this is all over, the PLP will go back to not checking for Save the Bays - all in a day's work in politics in this country. Meantime, everyday Bahamians are getting trampled by the system and these high-class "human rights activists" don't give them the time of day because they don't make for good headlines and wont get them a slot on the UN's roster of momentary popularity. That is what I cannot stomach. Louis Bacon, Peter Nygard, Fred Smith - these people are not hurting. They are living and twirling. It is the people in this country who are truly hurting despite their best efforts or desires to make it that concern me. Who fights for them? Who takes their plight to global agencies? People are being pushed into poverty, being killed extra-judiciously, being marginalized into permanent underclass, but Save the Bays wants us to cry with them to global agencies because they couldn't beat the PLP at a game of chess.
