Baha Mar wait

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The efforts to resolve the debacle at Baha Mar will not have resolution any time soon. The Chinese are not in a position where they have to sell the property in the foreseeable future.

The government of The Bahamas though is in a position where they desperately need the political mileage that the opening of that mega resort will provide through the creation of jobs.

Smelling the blood in the water, I anticipate that we will see the Chinese seemingly courting potential investors, with each deal not being completed for one reason or the other.

As the election looms closer, the Chinese will then use the promise of opening Baha Mar to increase the pressure on this government to “create” more opportunities for Chinese business interests to procure even greater control over this economy through additional investments.

Consistent with the modus operandi of this government, many of the deals that the government will agree to will not be in the best interest of the country, but since Bahamian politicians generally cannot think beyond getting elected or re-elected, we can be assured that China will greatly exploit the position that has been handed to them on a silver platter. The Bahamas got goosed again!
