THE 52nd annual Heart Ball was nothing short of “phenomenal”, according to organisers, and provided guests with an evening full of glitz and glamour, while also fulfilling the purpose of raising funds to help children who need urgent heart care.

The ball, which was held over the weekend at the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort, is the biggest fundraiser for the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. It was also one of the best, organisers told Tribune Health.

During the event there was a silent auction, table prizes, a raffle and much more. Entertainment was provided by the Soulful Groovers, the Ed Brice Orchestra, the Royal Defence Force Band and DJ Super Johnson.

“There was a full house and everything started on time and the night flowed smoothly. The food and entertainment were excellent, people danced all night, the silent auction prizes were well received and raffle ticket sales were very good,” said Sandra Kemp, public relations officer.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Golden Heart Award 2015 to Elma Garraway, a former educator. The Golden Heart award is public nominated award to an individual who has “given selflessly of themselves to promote human welfare and dignity, while making life better for his fellow man.”

Chairman of the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation R E Barnes made the presentation.

Mr Barnes noted in his presentation that Mrs Garraway had previously said one of her principles in life was that “the destiny of a nation lies in the hands of those who guide its youth.” Mr Barnes said Mrs Garraway had certainly done that in her life.

Mrs Garraway thanked the Heart Foundation for the recognition.

“A very emotional address was also given by Brieth Young, mother of Roman Russell, who had major surgery in October 2015,” said Ms Kemp.

“She spoke of her family’s experience, thanked the foundation for their help that made Roman’s surgery possible and encouraged attendees to continue their support of the foundation so that other children like Roman could be helped.”

There was also a video tribute to Michelangelo Baccelli, a 40-year Heart Ball Committee member who died in November after a short illness.

“We want are thankful for the support of the business community, media and those in attendance. We were able to reach our goals and raise significant funds for 2016 surgeries and heighten awareness of the foundation’s mission and purpose,” Ms Kemp said.
