Olympic Committee praises govt for high school sports expansion

THE Bahamas Olympic Committee has congratulated the Government on its expansion of High School Championships in an increasing number of core sports.

“Sports is an element that is critical in helping people to socialise and can be used positively to teach limits and the powerful concept that work and achievement are two things that always go together,” said Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller.

“It is a proud moment for the Olympic Movement in The Bahamas to see the explosive growth of sports in our country; in the high schools and at various sporting facilities throughout.”

“I want, therefore, to congratulate the Government sports programme through various school championships.”

He said the track and field and basketball championships have continued, soccer championships have been introduced with baseball championships coming and now there is hope for even softball championships, all of which will bring more avenues for achievement.

“These are all good, sound programmes to groom young people to become stronger citizens and take pride in the country. A young person can now take part in organised sports activities from the primary level straight through to the high school level.

“We hope that this continues to lay the foundation for lifelong involvement in sports, which is in line with the Olympic ideals of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, which aim to make sports part of the fundamental philosophy and principle of life.

“We look forward through this programme to young people becoming more disciplined additions to society in the coming years, and I emphasise our congratulations to Government on the wisdom of promoting these sporting high school championships.

“It is a positive way to go with young minds, promoting growth oriented competition.”
