Tough to do business

EDITOR, The Tribune.

THE Bahamas is very well known for how hard it is to do business especially with government - flying to New York this week I sat next to two investors and after an hour conversation all I can say - nuttin change from May 10th.

I have a copy of General Orders, the Rule book for the practice-business of the Civil Service (I suggest Public Service Commission prints copies or electronically makes them available to every Civil Servant)....

A civil servant answering the telephone must identify themselves ... when you ever hear that?

1935 ..... imagine the Civil Service is required to answer, actual word used ‘must’ with the least delay ..... when you last received this service?

1936 .... If a reminder is sent the senior officer receiving the incoming mail must call for the file and ascertain why the correspondence has not been dealt with!

1937 ... all mail unfiled 48 hours after receiving must be show to a senior officer who will give written instructions how the correspondence will be dealt with ..... 48 hours after.

General Orders might need upgrading to the electronic age but what it needs is a fundamental understanding of what is a Civil Servant? PM Minnis you better get the whip out as from what that investor told me their experience was terrible.

In a BTC Sales Office ..... big promotional poster on the wall- the composition is a young male jumping seemingly with joy but who is that gentleman? Are senior Civil Servants permitted to do private, paid-for-work, outside of their job?
