Put a smile on the faces of those who paved the way for us

EDITOR, The Tribune.

There are not many guarantees in life, but I can think of two that will happen to most of us who are lucky to live long enough.

We will get old and we will die! But what cannot be guaranteed is what mental or physical state we would be in or who we would be treated by those who claim to love us.

There are enough stories here in the Bahamas of parents and grandparents who have been discarded or abandoned when they reach the afternoon of their lives. Many have just been deemed useless and then “dumped”.

The sad part is that these people have given their lives and have now been relegated to the heap of rejects. This cannot help them toward maintaining their sanity or having anything to hold on to.

The least we could do is help to keep these people in good spirits at least for the remaining years and days ahead.

Therefore I am compelled to give back to these people the respect, love and dignity they deserve for their efforts. They should be allowed to continue to feel good about themselves and feel appreciated until…

I am appealing to all to join us with clearing our consciences in insisting that the people who gave their lives for us can feel the love for their efforts, this is the least we could do.

How do we measure how important this exercise really is? Think of how we would want others to treat us when we reach that dreaded “old age”.

It is high time to move the selfishness that has been shown by insensitive family members when their loved ones are slowing down.

Today is them, tomorrow is you.

How would you like to be treated.

I am definitely going to continue to do my part, and if you are interested contact me, let us put a smile on the faces of those who paved the way for us. God will smile!
