Amateur golfers take the spotlight in Cayman

THE 62nd Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships continued at the North Sound Golf Club in the Cayman Islands and several Bahamian golfers lowered their scores from the opening rounds.

Team Bahamas includes nine golfers - Richard Gibson Jr, Pablo Nahmias, Oren Butler, Peter McIntosh, Paul Tsavoussis and Nolan Johnson comprise the men's team with Taneka Sandiford, Haylie Turnquest and Ashley Michel are on the women's side.

On the men's side, Tsavoussis moved up several spots after he lowered his score seven strokes from day one. He shot a blistering 71 in round two, tied for second on the leaderboard on the day.

After improving from his opening round 78 Tsavoussis is now tied for 12th in the field with a score of 149 (+7). Nahmias is tied for 33th and shot a 75 on day two to improve on his day one 82 for a total score of 157 (+15).

Both Butler and Gibson are tied at No.36. Butler shot rounds of 81 and 77 while Gibson produced a 76 and 82 for a total score of 158 (+16). McIntosh shot rounds of 78 and 84 for a score 162 (+20) and is tied for 40th while Nolan Johnson shot 88 and 76 for a score of 164 (+22) at No.42 overall.

Junior golfing standouts Turnquest and Michel continue to perform well at the senior level.

Turnquest is currently tied for 10th place after she shot a 77 on day two, following an opening day 78 and a total score of 155 (+13).

Michel is tied for 12th place with a total score of 158 (+16). She followed her round of 83 with an eight-stroke improvement with yesterday's 75.

Taneka Sandiford is ranked 17th with a score of 166 (+24).

The CAGC is the region's premier event, played both as an individual stroke play event and as a country team competition with the Hoerman Cup for the Men's and the George Teale Trophy for the Ladies and also The Arthur Ziadie Trophy (Men and Ladies combined scores).

In the race for the Teale Trophy, the Bahamian trio is ranked No.4 among the seven teams in the field. The men's team is tied for No.6 in the standings among the eight teams vying for the Hoerman Cup.
